HOW TO GET ELECTED TO CITY OR VILLAGE COUNCIL IN OHIO

Collaboration and compromise. Those are the bywords of successful council members in cities and villages.

Council members can be of different political parties and can have different views on issues. But to get anything done, they must find common ground, at least temporarily. Whether you’re a council member in a large city or small village, you need a majority to get ordinances approved.

Usually, your most important vote of the year will be your municipality’s budget. Appropriations in a budget cover every expense from pencils to payrolls.

During any given year, you’ll vote on many other issues, too, from zoning to the traffic lights. And most of your votes will be on issues that affect voters’ everyday lives.

As a council member you won’t be an administrator. That’s the mayor’s job. But you will have a duty to oversee your municipality’s operations, to make sure taxpayers’ money is being well spent and government agencies are running efficiently.

In Ohio, requirements for qualifying for the ballot vary by municipality, but generally a candidate has to be a registered voter and live in the city or ward for a specific time period before the election.
